Doosan Bobcat
2019 Partner in Excellence Award

The Partner in Excellence Award recognizes a corporation or other organization that has provided outstanding support to the university.

The Doosan Bobcat story is a classic tale of American invention and entrepreneurship. Bobcat Company’s storied history began in rural North Dakota more than 60 years ago with the commercial production of its first compact loader.

In a small, Gwinner, N.D., factory, the Melroe Manufacturing Company improved on earlier versions when, in 1962, it built the first skid-steer loader to carry the Melroe Bobcat trademark.

Few inventions have done more to change the way the world works than the skid-steer loader. From it spawned the compact equipment business, of which Bobcat is the global leader. From its earliest days, innovation and entrepreneurship have driven Bobcat and its people. Today, Bobcat Company is North Dakota’s largest manufacturer.

Bobcat, which became part of the Doosan family of businesses in 2007, leads the industry in the design, manufacture, marketing and distribution of compact equipment, including compact track loaders, compact excavators, skid-steer loaders, mini track loaders, Toolcat utility work machines, utility vehicles, telescopic tool carriers and attachments.

Headquartered in West Fargo, N.D., Bobcat operates manufacturing and engineering facilities in Gwinner, Wahpeton, Bismarck and Litchfield, Minn. In Bismarck, Bobcat also operates its Acceleration Center, where engineers and other team members are tasked with initial design, prototype engineering, prototype manufacturing, computer simulation and testing of ideas and concepts. Bobcat manufactures compact equipment sold at more than 550 dealerships in the United States and Canada.

Bobcat loaders and other Bobcat equipment are used in communities throughout the world to help build, renovate and maintain homes, buildings, offices, landscapes, vital infrastructure and more. Bobcat customers are entrepreneurs who use their equipment to build and grow successful businesses.

Although Bobcat is an international company, it remains firmly committed to local service. As a community partner, Bobcat Company is a steadfast supporter of NDSU as well as its faculty and students, especially in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math. In 2005, Bobcat Company entered into a research partnership with NDSU, becoming the anchor tenant in the university’s Research and Technology Park. As part of the partnership, Bobcat contributed more than $400,000 in matching funds to involve students in research and development.

In 2015, Doosan Bobcat established NDSU’s largest scholarship endowment. The $3 million gift, combined with $1.5 million in state matching funds, provides annual scholarships to students pursuing STEM-related fields. The endowment distributes about $180,000 in partial scholarships to about 20 students every year.

Bobcat officials strongly believe that their corporate involvement is not only the right thing to do, but also fundamental to the company’s continued growth and success. While the investments strengthen educational programming and support student success, they also allow Bobcat to recruit the best and brightest talent and develop its future workforce. More than 160 of NDSU’s engineering graduates work at Bobcat Company today.

Bobcat Company supports NDSU in many other ways as well. Joel Honeyman, an NDSU grad and Bobcat’s vice president of Global Innovation, serves on the College of Engineering Advisory and Advancement Board. The company also offers about 75 STEM internships every year; sponsors programs that promote STEM fields among young students and hosts NDSU alumni lunches and other events.

Together, Doosan Bobcat and NDSU have formed a strong partnership that benefits both organizations, the community and the greater region.
